I began looking into different ideas for student collaboration. I have a few ideas on things that may be interesting, such as recycle art or taking mini pictures to create one image in the end. Some other thoughts include printmaking, painting, latch hook or metal. I was also looking into pinwheels for peace, but that is on Sept. 21st, something to think about for next year.
Collaboration ideas January 2011
After the group decided to have a central theme of the Earth, I began brainstorming new ideas for my project. I initially was going to do this project with 5th grade students, but do to weather concerns I have decided to switch to 3rd grade because I see them at the end of the day. I began collecting recycled materials to do an art piece. I sent out a request for materials to the faculty at my school and began to think of ideas for my students. I thought it would be interesting to use materials that could be woven or tied to create a wall hanging.
The PTA at my school was doing a share the warmth project where they made fleece blankets for those in need, they had a ton of scrap left that they were going to throw away I took that material and began cutting it into small strips (3rd graders cannot cut the material on their own). I then took the small strips and divided them into warm and cool colors. I also went through the ribbon and other material as well as plastic shopping bags and began cutting that into strips. I am going to have the students use these materials to create a fabric/recycled material wall hanging. Half the class will weave on plates using warm colors to create a circular weaving, the other half will tie the material to a grid using the cool colors creating a square.
For my second project the students are going to paper mache punching balloons using photographs of nature. On one ball there will be beautiful photos on the other there will be pollution photos, or photos of the earth being destroyed.
Having had to switch to third grade I have mixed thoughts. Their ability level is not as high as 5th, but they love art and are really excited about the project.
